On Heroes' Day, the Embassy of Romania to the Kingdom of Belgium, the Representation of the General Staff of Defense at SHAPE, and the Representation of the Romanian Patriarchate in Brussels honored the memory of Romanian soldiers buried in Mons, Belgium.
In the military cemetery of Mons, Belgium, lie the bodies of Romanian soldiers who died during World War I. In the same area is the military headquarters of the NATO Allied Command Operations - Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), which commands all NATO operations worldwide and where our country has a military representation.
The Embassy of Romania to the Kingdom of Belgium, represented by Her Excellency Mrs. Andreea Păstârnac, Ambassador of Romania to Belgium, together with Major General Constantin Dobre representing the General Staff of the Romanian Armed Forces at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), paid tribute, on May 25, 2025, on the Feast of the Ascension, to the heroes of the Romanian nation buried in this part of Europe. In the Romanian Orthodox Christian tradition, heroes are specifically remembered on the day of the Ascension of the Lord.
On behalf of the Representation of the Romanian Orthodox Church, in the presence of Romanian diplomatic and military officials, Father Gabriel Pop conducted the commemoration of the heroes of World War I buried in Mons, who "sacrificed themselves for the defense of the homeland and the ancestral Orthodox faith, for the freedom, unity, and dignity of the Romanian people, in honor of the faith in Christ and for the salvation of mankind."
